The novelist Patricia Highsmith has been responsible for some of the greatest stories ever to grace the silver screen including Strangers on a Train, and The Talented Mr Ripley.
She also wrote a semi-autobiographical novel, The Price of Salt, under the pseudonym Claire Morgan. Now that book has been adapted by the talented Mr Todd Haynes – as Carol – our November Film Club choice.
Haynes is best known for his 2002 film, Far From Heaven – a story of inter-racial love in the 1950s. Carol is another love story set in the 1950s, but this time it has a lesbian relationship at its heart. The film has already received great acclaim – a standing ovation at Cannes and near universal rave reviews. In particular, the two leads: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara give exceptional performances.
Rolling Stone says “Carol is a romantic spellbinder that cuts deep. It’s one of the year’s very best films.”
The LA Times: “The beautiful and thrilling ‘Carol’ belongs among the best movie love stories”.
Come and join us for this decidedly non-traditional Christmas Carol (sorry!!)
We’re seeing the film at 8pm on Sunday 29th November. We’ll be in the Tricycle bar from 7:30. (Please note – this is a subtitled performance). Everyone is welcome, and you can book in advance or turn up on the day. Book Row G if you want to sit with the rest of us (you don’t have to).
Afterwards we’ll head to The Black Lion across the road for a drink and discussion if it’s not too late.
Hopefully see you there
Nathan & Mark
