The only way is up…. it seems. — 6 Comments

  1. What a complete nightmare … 11 storeys??? Also traffic on WEL will just not move most of the time with the level of congestion … as you say it’s bad enough now. Do we need another supermarket? – There are 5 in the vicinity already – 2 Sainsburys, 2 Tescos and Waitrose; plus Sainsburys in Kilburn … What is “affordable” – if it anything like the development next door to me in Fortune Green Road, it is shabby, but not really affordable at all.

  2. On the other hand…

This development would be a tremendous improvement on what is on the site at the moment.

It represents a step-change for this stretch of West End Lane and would at last give West Hampstead an “entrance” we could all be proud of.

The increase in population will be of great benefit to local businesses.

And finally, the buildings do at least appear to be of quality design!

  3. Good to see some differing views on here. Couple of responses:
@Jill: i think the supermarket is probably the furthest away from happening, and much as with the FG development you refer to, the developers like to wave around fancy sounding shop names to win over locals when it may have been no more than a mild enquiry.

@Anonymous: The proposal is for a zero-parking development

@Toby: Agree with some of your points – although some local businesses will lose their premises and may not be able to afford the new rents on this site, which might be taken up by more chains – good for broader local economy perhaps is as far as I’d put it. Design is rather dull I thought – although certainly not unpleasant – I’ve not seen the Iverson Rd proposal but gather that is more controversial in terms of architecture. The main issue with this site is surely just height.

  4. agree with WHampstead..with the dull design, they could have come up with something much more interesting ..anyhow we will be really affected from this development as we live in medley road at ground floor level; our direct light will considerably change (disappear possibly at winter time), and our views will be of ‘well designed’ brick buildings w
…I hope the community will object to these outrageous 11!!!!! storey or even 7 storey buildings that don’t have any precedent whatsoever…hopefully camden will take under consideration our views as the developers/architects don’t seem to as yet…

  5. The height! It’s totally out of proportion with the rest of the area, especially that view coming up along West End Lane — already a traffic bottleneck. I didn’t know anyone built new residential areas without matching parking facilities. The planners should try parking around here after 10pm.

By all means build more homes, but profit shouldn’t come before consideration for the character of the area. After all, the new residents will also have their environment enhanced by sensitive planning rather than everyone being mown down by the developers’ tanks.
