Review: The Saloon Singer at New End Theatre — 6 Comments

  1. What is it with this dragging people onto the stage? Lionel Blair announced at the beginning of his New End show that a "lucky lady" would dance with him at the end; all the women in the (sparse) audience visibly froze in horror.

  2. Hi

On the whole I feel that this is a fair review. Holly Penfield has a great voice and her show would benefit from more straight singing and less “schtick”. She has the talent to not have to rely on all the audience participation and breathy dialogue. However I do wonder why this reviewer keeps referring to Holly’s age? Would he have found the “riding” episode acceptable if done by a younger woman?!!

  3. Not sure I "kept on" referring to her age. I suspect I would have at least accepted the 'riding' incident as marginally more comedic than I did, although frankly it's more about choosing the right audience member who will go along with it.

  4. Who is old enough here to remember Holly when she used to do her mad act on Monday nights in Kilburn's Black Lion when it was a real pub?
She was fantastic and always pulled in a big crowd.
Those were the days! The Black Lion was the place to be. Gilad Atzmon used to play his sax on Tuesdays, blues on Thursdays and rock n' roll on Fridays and Saturdays.
