Little Waitrose; big lorries? — 15 Comments

  1. I wonder what being a ‘little’ Waitrose will mean for shopping choice? In Sainsburys and Tesco we get royally ripped-off. They know people will use the stores, so not a ‘value’ product in sight (though perhaps not a bad thing where Tesco are concerned!)
Also, whilst I don’t frequent Pizza Express often (too noisy – a crèche with bad acoustics usually), I think it fits in well there and does blend in nicely, with people sitting outside in warmer weather etc.

  2. I’m so happy Waitrose is coming… Doing a little dance of
Hurry Up; Hurry Up…. Excitement between me and all of my mummy friends in the area… No one I have spoken to yet has thought it’s a bad idea… We are all excited… It’s exactly what West Hamptead needs I think… I love waitrose and see it as a treat when I go to Brent Cross; to think its a few streets away from me; I think ill be there everyday… However if they buck up the prices as its a small store; ill boycott them like I do with the Tescos and Sainsburys for overcharging on the goods they have in their normal stores.. Only bread and milk there for me.

  3. If one single car is in the parking/deliver bays that the deliveries require, then all hell breaks loose as there is no alternative for the lorry. At Tesco, as it is a yellow/double yellow, the chance of someone being there at the wrong (after 0830 time) is negligible (probably why they only deliver during “restricted” hours).

The solution is cut down the trees opposite and use the small grass area as a local carpark and then put yellow lines (restricted from 6.30am) outside Waitrose. Now, just how much do we really want another supermarket? – PS: I am happy they are thinking of coming, but three supermarkets with articulated lorries every day? How about making WEL one way?

  4. Pretty concerned about the noise – the current noise levels are pretty high due to building works on West Cottages (so not sure that 'ambient' is the correct term) – which already wake me up (earlier than the 8am time they're MEANT to start working) – the noise of delivery vans and metal cages is bound to be a pain in the arse.

    • Here’s what the noise assessment info says about conditions during the assessment:

The assessment ran from Thursday 29th July 2013 at 1500 hours to 1000 hours the following day.

The dominant noise source at the site is road traffic using West End Lane, and occasional
construction noise from road works taking place in front of the site.

There were no other significant sources of noise during the survey, other than those typical to a retail / commercial location.

So… if you have any recollection of that date and whether there WERE other extraneous noises at the time, this would be a good thing to raise with Camden.

    • Thanks! I will look into it – it definitely has been noisier than normal with the building works on West Cottages – you'd think that the noise assessment people would notice that though..

  5. I don't understand the need for a little Waitrose. There was no need for Sainbury's to open their mini version either. Both of these supermarkets have big shops in walking distance.

  6. Does anyone know if Pizza Express will be re-locating in the immediate area? Maybe they could take the empty MeLoveSushi unit a few doors away.

    • Why on earth would people eat cardboard-like Pizza Express when there is a fabulous Trattoria 2 doors down??? La Smorfia makes delicious authentic pizzas!

    • To Anonymous and WHampstead:

Your comments about Pizza Express do you no credit in terms of your food taste… it does illustrate the point about your excitement for over-hyped/priced Waitrose fare…

    • Unsurpisingly, given your enthusiasm for ranting at anyone who has the audacity to have a different point of view from you, you have misread my comment. I make no comment on the quality of pizza express food, merely that it’s popular with locals.

Its popularity with locals is clear, given the number of comments that I’ve received over the past couple of months – especially from people with children – asking/hoping that it’ll stay in the area,

Personally I have no problem with Pizza Express although I think I’ve eaten in the WH branch only twice in my life. Still, much more fun to read what you want to read and then have a good old moan than to engage constructively in the debate, right?

  7. As a mum of two, often noisy, kids, I see Pizza Express as a bit of a haven. A glass of wine for me and a pizza and some colouring pencils for them. The space to run around a bit at 5pm on a Friday afternoon with nobody really minding very much. The only other diners there at that time are invariably women with wine and children, seeking a bit of peace. I shall mourn the loss of Pizza Express.

  8. Everyone I've spoken to is very pleased Little Waitrose is coming to WEL, although I shall stick to the one in Swiss Cottage as it will be nearer for me. For Pizza Express lovers, they can eat at the one in Abbey Road, surely? Now all that needs to be done is get rid of Tesco.
