Musicians in West Hampstead and Kilburn – part one — 15 Comments

  1. Yes really interesting post. It makes the streets of Kilburn and West Hampstead more alive. That must be good history. I wonder whether Robert Fripp will be popping over to visit Brian Eno in your next instalment…?

  2. Gaspar and I were good friends. We worked together with Manfred Mann, Graham Bond, Dr John, Elkie. Joan Amatrading and a few others. He is also on the first Vinegar Joe album. I remember him serving me a plate of giant African land snail at his West Hampstead flat! There were several crawling around the inside of his fridge!

  3. For an American living in West Hampstead and then Kilburn for over 24 years and being of a certain age (57) this is just an amazing revelation! I love music, jazz, rock, folk, and this just brings alive such an iconic history to this area! I have lived in about 5 or 6 different flats over this time both in West Hampstead, Queen’s Park and Kilburn and it is just amazing to think who might have lived there before! I knew of Decca in West Hampstead, being a big Moody Blues fan, but the rest was just one delightful surprise after another. Thanks for this and very much looking forward to part 2!

    • Hi Paul,
Thanks for this information. Yes, it seemed that Brian Jones lived for a short time in a flat in Weech Road when he came to London from Cheltenham. I will add this in to the update to Part 2 which I have just posted.

  4. Yes, according to Bill Wyman’s Stone Alone book (p.119) “his first permanant move to London from Cheltenham was to a flat in Weech Road…he was joined briefly by his fourteen-year old girlfriend”. He wasn’t happy when his other girlfriend turn up with one of his several love children though…
