Tom’s Diner

Welcome to Tom’s Diner – our collection of West Hampstead restaurant reviews written by Tom or Jonathan. Tom is our local gourmand, with a healthy appetite for red wine and strong views about how salads should be dressed. Above all, he believes fervently that prawns should be treated with respect. Jonathan, who organises local restaurant meet-ups, veers inexorably towards Sicilian wines when he sees them (and just veers after having drunk them) but refuses point blank to eat beetroot.

Salmon tacos

Tom tackles a taco at One Bourbon

Strange things have been happening in the world of tomato ketchup. First, upon requesting some whilst enjoying a magnificent fish & chips in The Beehive, Crawford Street, the waitress apologised that they didn’t have any ketchup, “however we do have this…”, she said, before disappearing for a moment and returning with several sachets of sauce […]

Tom dives in to Nautilus

After a few drinks with locals in the splendid glow of the Green Room, two things occurred to me in a flash of uncharacteristic inspiration. First, that I was extremely hungry, and second, that I’d (shamefully) never eaten in Nautilus, Fortune Green’s acclaimed fish restaurant and takeaway. I’d heard interesting things and was rather intrigued […]

Curry West Hampstead

Tom curates West Hampstead’s curry choices

Given that the weather will soon (already has) turned ominous, I thought a quick round-up of a few local curry establishments would be in order (though they’re listed in no particular order). Not that there’s anything wrong with eating such things on a hot summer’s day of course… Predictably, I’ll start with the take-away only Tiffin […]

What have you missed since May 15th?

The big news: Hustings on Tuesday at the Sheriff Centre. Doors open at 7:00, starts at 7:30. Next up in our election 2017 interviews: the Conservative candidate for H&K, Claire-Louise Leyland. A man was sentenced for ‘disgusting’ violence on his arrest. Election news If you aren’t registered to vote tomorrow (Monday 22) is your final chance! […]

An Insight into: Brinkworth Dairy

London Farmers’ Market, which runs the West Hampstead market, has an annual competition to find customers favourite stall at each market. In West Hampstead, the winner (again) was Brinkworth Dairy. So who better for WHL’s next Insight. Brinkworth Dairy is run by Ceri and Chad Cryer (helped by their young three boys and other family members) […]

How rich must you be to afford “affordable” housing?

After many people – including West Hampstead Life – made a fuss about the lack of affordable housing provision in the Liddell Road scheme, Camden promised that the 156 West End Lane scheme would meet the 50% affordable housing quota by floorspace. The development, which was given the go-ahead by the planning committee on Thursday, […]

West Hampstead Square - when will it be finished?

Frustrated buyers face more delays at Ballymore

West Hampstead Square still isn’t finished. As you will have noticed. Progress is being made as recent tweets show but it’s well overdue, and while it’s annoying for locals as the roads clog up with lorries delivering materials, for those who’ve bought apartments (some of whom are existing West Hampstead residents), the delays are going […]
