Kebab shops and Question Time: Tweet of the Year winner

The votes are in and have been independently counted and verified. Which means I looked at them.

With a staggering 42 percent of the vote, we had a runaway winner for Tweet of the Year. Congratulations Freddie Gavita.

You know you're in West Hampstead when

We had a tie for second place, both with 11 percent of votes. Well done Shirley Cooney and Daniel Walker.

Freddie joins the Hall of Fame:

WHL will be catching up with Freddie to give him his (very local) prize as soon as possible. Congratulations to everyone who made the shortlist.

Vote now for Tweet of the Year

It’s as much a part of the Christmas holidays as being left hanging under the mistletoe or getting the gristly bit of the turkey… the West Hampstead Life Tweet of the Year competition is back for 2014. Who will join the roll of honour that stretches back to Jon Kelly, Heather Wilson, and Corinne Gladstone?

First up – the tweets, read them all, then vote at the end. They are served in chronological order. Voting closes on Sunday at 10pm.

And now the vote

Tweet of the Year: Your chance to vote

It’s that time folks… Forget the Oscars, the Grammys, BAFTAs, Bookers, Pulitzers and Nobels. There is only one award worth winning in West Hampstead – Tweet of the Year.

This year we have two categories: Tweet of the Year and Photo of the Year. All entries are anonymous – I’ll reveal all the nominees’ names after the results are in. There are prizes for the winners.

Voting ends on New Year’s Eve at 5pm. I’m going to trust you all to play nicely – I don’t want to have to bring in UN inspectors to oversee this!

Photo of the Year is a slightly trickier affair. I’ll show you all the photos and then there’s a poll at the end to vote for the one you like most. OK, not that trickier.

Possibly worst example of fly tipping at Minster Rd recycling. I complained, council cleared but it goes on.

Tweet of the Year: We have a winner

Thanks to the 345 of you who voted in the Tweet of the Year competition.

In the end it was a two-horse race, but the winner, coming from behind on the very last day of voting, was Heather Wilson with 82 votes

Overheard conversation in WHampstead: a little boy saying to his Nan “I’m 9th fastest in the class, but I know what I’m best at: politeness”

In second place was Lauren with 76 votes:

Last night at a local tweet-up a nice lady said to me “I can’t be the only one who thought this was going to be a naked dogging thing”

And in third place, back on 46 votes was Simon:

Just visited West Hampstead Post Office. LOVE the whole “Communist Russia” theme they’ve got going on

Congratulations to Heather who’ll get her prize as soon as possible. Thank you all for voting.

Tweet of the Year: Vote now

Forget the Oscars, the BRITS, the Golden Globes or even Sports Personality. There’s only one annual award worth winning. The West Hampstead Life Tweet of the Year award. It’s here. It’s now. It’s competitive.

Below are the eight tweets I’ve shortlisted. Vote for your favouite – please vote only once, and I shall be on the lookout for people trying to cheat! The poll closes at midnight on New Year’s Day

There is an actual prize for the winner, so lets see who will follow in the footsteps of the inimitable Jon Kelly who won in 2011. He got posted to Washington DC recently – that’s the impact that having Tweet of the Year on your CV can have.

Off you go!
